kids, in the comments of this entry please tell me facts about vampires according to films or tv programs you've seen or books you've read, preferably stating the source too, but it doesnt matter. also supply me with links to websites with 'useful' information and 'rules' about how vampires work. such as does their hair grow, likes and dislikes, things that kill them, how one becomes a vampire. i don't care if any of this information is in contradiction, i dont mind. this is research, and i'll appreciate anything you can tell me a great deal cos i can't remember everything all the time.

ps. if you could pimp thislike a brutal honesty meme or something, i'd appreciate it as i'm sure there are lots of people who know about vampires that i don't know.

i really don't want to be able to answer this as it's a bit geeky, but yeah i feel obliged to contribute...

i think it's pretty much different depending on the author behind the particular vampire but general consensus seems to be that sunlight & stakes are a no no. vampire fiction authors disagree on the subject of religious paraphenilia like holy water and crosses though, some claiming that our lack of faith makes their powers diminish or that vampires & demons & the like came before religion and therefore kind of stand above it, but i'm going to go with joss whedon and the buffy crew, because the aestethic is more appealing somehow. there is no true vampire canon in fiction really. some say vampires can shapeshift and take the forms of bats and wolves, others say they can change bodies with their victims in order to stay anonymous (although i find that rather silly).

i feel like such a geek. this is what happens when you watch too much buffy and spend your early teens reading anne rice and shit.

'ts all good dear. geekery is the way to go.

see the point of this whole thing is finding out as many different vampoire canons as i can and then choose the bits that are most useful in my vampire epic. i may have told you about it once, i cant remember.. but i cant say anything here, in public and so fort.

i just remembered the whole thing last night when we started watching blade I and i was going whaat at his weapons. didn't finish it though cos carl 'wasnt in the mood' though i think it was a bit revenge for me not being in the mood for freddy got fingered the other week, and creep the other day.

i wish i could watch some buffy but no one lets me. and i dont have any.

i remember reading a pseudoscientific article on how vampires are actually reptilian cause it'd somehow explain their strange metabolism and being able to live on blood, etc., not very credible but it's a fun idea. les google will help you.

I think Hughes used to be quite hot on this - I'll poke her about it later.

I seem to remember that the novel I Am Legend is quite an interesting take on the vampire thing. A more scientific mutation vibe than the more romantic gothic approach.

According to the excellent film Dracula 2000 Dracula is actually Judas, which explains his dislike of silver and daylight, since he was payed for betraying Jesus in silver coins and ... something about sunrise. Forget what. In the end Dracula explodes. Ace.
The non-2000 Dracula has to rest in Transylvanian earth.
I remember some movie where in order to turn into a vampire one has to be bitten three times. In the Anne Rice novels you'd have to drink a vampire's blood to turn. And in a series of children's books vampires just procreate like humans and there's no turning from human to vampire.
And that's about all I can come up with right now.

Okay [livejournal.com profile] richey_edwards directed me here because I'm a huge nerd.

A lot of stuff depends on the author.

Random stuff that comes to mind:

In the Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books have a lot of interesting quirks and I'd point you to wikipedia to look through their things. All the "marks" and Human Servants and things.

One thing I like about the vamps in that is that holy water, bibles, and crosses work but only if the person using it believes in the Lord.

Some people (like the Buffy Vamps) can eat human-food (though usually taste is diminished / not really there at all) though in others (like Christopher Moore's Jody from Bloodcuking Fiends and the new You Suck) has that even a little makes them throw up.) More often than not vamps miss peoplefood.

Several series have that a vampire needs to be invited inside a place by its owner (and can be later uninvited). Notably Buffy and Laurel K. off the top of my head though Im sure theres others.

Usually vampires don't need to breathe (though a lot are said to do it out of habit) and or their hearts dont beat.

Whaaat else.

Fire and sunlight kill.

In some series (like Laurel K's and Anne Rice's), daylight puts vamps out to sleep indefinately and are, well, dead to the world, haha, until nightfall. Others, like Buffy, can have them up whenever they feel like it (though sunlight is still lethal so they stay inside. Also in Angel, I remember the windows in Wolfram and Hart had something or other done to them so the vampires wouldnt sizzle.)

Okay thats enough from me because I feel like a GIANT DORKAPOTAMUS.
So okay hope I helped.

Recently been reading (but haven't finished) 'The Historian' by Elizabeth Kostova, a very good vamoire novel from last year. It takes a historical, folklorey view of the vampire legend. If you want to know about vampire folklore then it's a pretty good source, lots of interesting litle bits and bobs. Only stuff i can remember right now is that you have to be bitten three times by a vampire before you become undead and a proper vampire. Oh and Dracula was a proper historical figure, reputedly Vlad the Impaler.
